St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children to remain open

Philadelphia Academic Health System, LLC, (PAHS), the parent company of Hahnemann University Hospital and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, has announced that Hahnemann will be closing on or about September 6 due to continuing, unsustainable financial losses.

“Our primary concern is the care of our patients,” said Allen Wilen, chief restructuring officer for PAHS. “Our dedicated staff will continue to care for each and every individual, until all patients can be safely discharged or transferred to new facilities.”

“Our goal in acquiring the hospitals was to help them both flourish and provide world-class care,” said Joel Freedman, founder and president of PAHS. “We relentlessly pursued numerous strategic options to keep Hahnemann in operation, and have been uncompromising in our commitment to our staff, patients, and community. We are saddened our efforts have not been successful, and we are faced with the heartbreaking reality that Hahnemann cannot continue to lose millions of dollars each month and remain in business.”

Hahnemann will immediately begin an orderly wind down of its inpatient and outpatient treatment services in conjunction with a comprehensive closure plan. Its officials are working with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia in connection with this effort. The hospital is also working to find placement for all residents and fellows completing their training at Hahnemann.

“While Hahnemann will be closing, I want to be clear that St. Christopher’s will remain open. This difficult choice will enable us to focus on the future of St. Christopher’s,” Freedman added. “We anticipate a bright future for the hospital and its uniquely talented team.”

St. Christopher’s is one of the nation’s leading providers of pediatric services in the Philadelphia area. The hospital has 188 pediatric beds; 1,900 employees; and numerous clinics, providing a comprehensive range of pediatric specialties and sub specialties. As an academic medical center, St. Christopher’s supports academic programs at Drexel University College of Medicine, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, and Albert Einstein Healthcare Network.

Hahnemann University Hospital is a Level 1 trauma center with 496 beds and approximately 2,500 employees.
