Thinking about exploring law school but need to get the facts and connect with those who have already been through it in order to make a more fully informed decision? This fall, Houston, the fourth largest city in the country, hosts the nation’s premier information-sharing and networking empowerment event focused on the success of aspiring Black lawyers. The Sixth Annual National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law School Recruitment Fair 2010 will be held from Thursday, November 11 until Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the University of Houston’s University Center in Houston, Texas.
This year’s schedule is jam-packed with everything any aspiring lawyer would need to know to make an educated decision regarding pursuing a professional legal education. There will be powerful and thought-provoking workshop sessions and panel discussions made up of expert law school administrators and accomplished law students, lawyers and judges imparting information in all critical areas a future law student should become knowledgeable about. Critical information will be imparted through discussions and workshops covering the law school admissions process, the Law School Admission Test, personal and diversity statements, financing a legal education, selecting a law school, preparing for and making the most of the law school experience, diversity issues, passing the bar exam, different legal career options and paths, finding success in the legal job search, networking and relationship building, etiquette and business image, strategic planning, and the keys to career advancement. All sessions will be followed by a question and answer period.
Furthermore, the popular Law School Recruitment Fair will take place during a dedicated time block where pre-law students will have the opportunity to talk to law school representatives from nearly 100 law schools at all tier levels from across the country.
Highlights of the conference will include powerful keynote speeches. An opening talk by Columbia Law Professor Conrad Johnson, discussing his recent study “The Disturbing Trend in Law School Diversity,” will kick off the event. Karen Wishart, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of TV One, a major African American cable/satellite television network that reaches approximately 50 million homes, will share an empowering message with participants. Kent Lollis, Executive Director for Diversity Initiatives, for the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), will also address attendees during the Friday keynote luncheon. Moreover, Adrien Katherine Wing, an international and comparative Law Professor at the University of Iowa College of Law, among the top-tiered law schools in the country, will share her experiences with conferees. Additionally, Dennis Shields, former Dean of Admissions at the University of Michigan Law School, whose admissions policies were unsuccessfully challenged in the landmark Supreme Court affirmative action admissions case Grutter v. Bollinger, will speak with those in attendance. Before the conference officially begins, motivational pre-conference power sessions will be conducted by Attorney Evangeline M. Mitchell, conference Executive Director, founder of The National Black Pre-Law Network, and author of The African American Pre-Law School Advice Guide and The African American Law School Survival Guide. She will explain to participants exactly what they should do to truly maximize their experience throughout the conference and law fair, and will stress the importance of creating a strategic action plan and following through to help ensure their future success.
This groundbreaking “must attend” event is free of charge and open to the public. The conference is free as a special service to students who will need to cover the costs of travel and hotel accommodations attending from across the country in a down economy. It in no way reflects the true value or quality of the event, both of which are high. The conference team is available to assist students in finding low cost flights and roommates to help defray the expense of their hotel stay
High school students, college students, college graduates, working professionals, career changers, pre-law, career, and diversity/multicultural advisors, as well as supporters, and parents who want to encourage and guide their children who are interested in law school are all encouraged to come out and take part in what this conference has to offer.
