Obituary: Dr. Beutel Canty, 73, educator, Deputy Director of OIC

Funeral services for Dr. Beutel Canty, former Deputy Director of the Opportunities of Industrialization Center, Inc. (OIC) were held on March 27, 2010 at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, 10th and Wallace Streets. Dr. Canty died March 19, 2010, he was 73.

 

Beutel Canty was born in Coconut Grove in Miami, Florida on November 14, 1936. His primary education, Miami at the George Washington Carver School was interrupted when the family moved North to Philadelphia. Dr. Canty graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and went on to graduate from Cheyney State University. He returned to Cheyney for certification in Administration and Supervision. He obtained an ED.D in Urban Education from Temple University.

 

Dr. Canty taught and was an administrator in the Philadelphia Public School System. Beutel left the school district in 1968 to work in Dr. Leon H. Sulllivan’s Opportunities of Industrialization Center, Inc. (QIC) program beginning as Supervisor, then Director and finally Deputy Director of an early pilot partnership between OIC and the School District to reclaim drop-outs and poor attendees from Germantown High School in 1972.

 

He was a training consultant with the Opportunities Academy of Management Training (OAMT). He served a wide variety of community-based organizations on a national level in the area of Administration and Management Training, and also as an instructor in the Philadelphia Miniversity Program, a program begun by Mrs. Grace Sullivan, Dr. Leon Sullivan’s wife.

 

Dr. Canty was affiliated with a number of professional associations that included Kappa Delta Phi National Honor Society, Epsilon Phi Tau National Industrial Arts Association of Pennsylvania, International Technology Education Association, American Management Association, American Society for Training and Development, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, Men of BACA. Cheyney University Foundation Director, and Educator’s Roundtable, Inc. Dr. Canty also served as a publicschool evaluator in the Middle States Atlantic Accreditation Association.

 

Dr. Canty was a hunter and a certified scuba diver.

 

Beutel Canty is survived by his wife Shirley, a daughter Shaylynn (Allisan ) a brother Bisby Jr. (Loretta) a grandson Brandon, and a large number of friends.
