
ABOVE PHOTO: Student essay contest winners were all smiles last week at Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church when they were presented with their plaques; shopping coupons from Jeff Brown’s Family of Shop Rite Stores and gifts from Sneaker Villa. Each of the 25 winners was presented with a brand new $100 bill courtesy of Kenny Brooks (far right) and his wife Carlette, (far left) owner/operators of Carlette’s Hide-A-Way Lounge in Yeadon, PA. The NAACP Philadelphia Branch supported the contest devised by Mr. and Mrs. Brooks who along with Radio One personality, “Lady B” (seated in front) last year started Hands Across Philadelphia to support programs to curtail violence within the city’s teenage population. The students who received prizes from Hands Across Philadelphia are: Michael Joel, Devon Sistrunk, Nyderah Chapman, Amber Shoffner, Danaya Lendell, Nina Curtis, Keaundra Clark, Khalijah Baldwin, Taylor Dow, Aleyah Centeno, Mikayala Rose, Hadid Thomas, Angela Dean, Jailyn Wilson, Nadira Connors, Troy Taylor, James Vine, Kenya Moore, Celine Fulgenicio, Kevin Rodriguez, Vivian Santos, and Kayla Hadley.
