Communities In Schools of Philadelphia (CIS of Philadelphia) is proud to announce that one of their students in Philadelphia Freedom Schools, Senior Jamil Caldwell, is the recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship (GMS) out of 24,000 young people in the country. Jamil currently is a 12th grader at Mathematics, Civics, and Science Charter School on 447 N. Broad Street. The scholarship will cover his undergraduate, masters and doctoral school

On Tuesday, May 1, 2012, Jamil Caldwell and other recipients were recognized by Mayor Michael Nutter as apart of the Gates Millennium Scholars. The recognition ceremony will took place n the Mayor’s Reception Room, in City Hall.

Jamil said, “I am shocked and overwhelmed that my hard work was rewarded out of 24,000 applicants.” He has been accepted to: Delaware State University; Indiana University of Pennsylvania; Penn State University; Lock Haven University; and Hampton University. GMS selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. They provide Gates Millennium Scholars with personal and professional development through leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.

The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential by: reducing financial barriers; developing a diversified program of future leaders for America; and providing seamless support from undergraduate through doctoral programs.

Jamil has participated in CIS of Philadelphia’s Freedom Schools program for three years serving as a Junior Servant Leader and now serving as a Fannie Lou Hamer Trainer.

He said he appreciates the award which will allow him to pay for school where he might not have otherwise. Jamil explained, “Philadelphia Freedom Schools prepared me for the academic rigor and persistence that I needed when applying for the scholarship as well as maintaining the grades and activities necessary to qualify.

Bunmi Samuels, Director of Philadelphia Freedom Schools said, “We are immensely proud that for the past three years we have had three Gates Millennium Scholarship honorees within the program (Shaneese Thompson (2010), Ewinka Romulus (2011), and Jamil Caldwell (2012).”
