For 40, faithful years, Bishop Nathaniel Shaw, Jr. has been a member of Oak Lane United Church of Christ, and has served as an Under Shepherd to its members.

In his daily walk with the Lord, he has helped prepare us for a lifetime of taking up our cross and following the One who has given us life. He has encouraged us to be strong in our faith, to enjoy life to the fullest and to be hesitant in following the temptations of an ungodly society.

Bishop Shaw is always willing to help others without seeking reward. He advocates for a better quality of life for the poor and oppressed. During his ministry, he has held Bible classes, mentored our youth and has supported the community by sponsoring feeding and clothing programs. Additionally, he has been an active member of The Philadelphia Police Clergy since 2003 with the 35th Police District.

Bishop Shaw shows a compassion for the less fortunate, the ‘at-risk’ and underprivileged young people in our society.. This is exemplified by his service as a teacher with the Philadelphia School District for over 25 years. He has participated in such programs as: Summer Instructional, Twilight, Extended Day and Saturday School. He also served as a Philadelphia Teachers Union Building Representative.

Education is important to Bishop Shaw as indicated by bis own extensive educational background. After graduating from Thomas Edison in 1969 he continued his education and matriculated at Wilberforce University (Ohio) in 1970 for one semester. From Wilberforce he transferred to Temple University where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology in 1973. He then continued there for graduate courses the following year. He earned an MBA at Antioch University in 1986.

Heeding the call to the ministry, he enrolled in The Urban Lutheran Theological Institute where, in 1996, he acquired his Master of Divinity Degree and a Doctorate of Divinity from the Philadelphia Evangelistic School in 2004. Also, in 2004, Bishop Shaw was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from Antioch University.

Policy changes within the School District required specific certifications, prompting Bishop Shaw to return to school. In 2005, he earned his Certification in Special Education from Cheyney University. Still pursuing his educational path he took additional graduate courses at The University of Pennsylvania from 2006 to 2007.
