School for former high school dropouts asks supporters to vote online through American Giving Awards program
YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School announced this week it will compete later this month with charities nationwide for a donation ranging from $125,000 to $1,000,000 through the American Giving Awards program presented by Chase Bank. If selected to win through online votes, YouthBuild Philadelphia will use the funding to help former high school dropouts earn their diploma and transition into college and a career.
YouthBuild is the only Philadelphia-based non-profit in this year’s American Giving Awards program, and one of only 25 non-profit organizations chosen to compete in the online voting competition, which will start in late November.
“We see this as a huge opportunity for Philadelphia,” said Simran Sidhu, YouthBuild Philadelphia’s executive director. “Funding for YouthBuild Philadelphia is a high-return investment in our city’s future leaders and workforce. The difference in lifetime earnings between high school dropouts and college graduates is staggering. Even a donation of $125,000 would significantly strengthen our efforts to give dropouts the supports they need to pursue a college degree and a career.”

Twenty-five past Chase Community Giving grant recipients—5 charities in 5 different categories—have been chosen to participate in the American Giving Awards. The 5 charity categories are: 1.) Educators & Mentors; 2.) Champions of Health & Wellness; 3.) Heroes & Leaders; 4.) Community Builders; and 5.) Youth Developers. Fans are being asked to vote for the charity they feel is making the biggest difference in their community. Voting will run from November 27, 2012 at 12:00 AM, ET until December 4, 2012 at 11:59:59 PM, ET. The charities receiving the most votes in each of the 5 categories will receive grants.
Of these five charities, the charity with the most votes in their respective category will receive $1 million, the runner up will receive $500,000, the 3rd place charity will receive $250,000, and the 4th and 5th place charities will each receive $125,000 grants.
Winners will be announced on December 8, 2012 during a nationally televised awards ceremony on NBC.
