The Urban League of Philadelphia to provide free workshops on business opportunities, career development and housing counseling during 2015 Empowerment Week

A week long series of workshops and panels with noted experts will culminate the 2015 Empowerment Gala Awards and Scholarship Presentation.

The Urban League of Philadelphia (ULP) will kick off its annual Empowerment Week of events from May 12th to May 16th by hosting a series of free workshops that will be open to the public and will be held at various locations (see event list for details on times and locations). Workshops will feature noted experts who will share their insights and offer vital advice on topics such as business opportunities, career development, and housing counseling in Philadelphia. Each workshop is a unique chance to network with influential business leaders and receive valuable information from local and regional employers. 

Empowerment Week will culminate with the 2015 Empowerment Gala on Saturday, May 16th from 5:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. The black tie event will feature scholarship presentations to over 70 college bound students from the Philadelphia region; and awards will be given to Bank of America and Eley Electrical Contractors, LLC. for their outstanding service to the community. All proceeds from the 2015 Empowerment Gala will support vital programs for entrepreneurs, job seekers, youth, and financial literacy. Countdown to DNC 2016: Exploring Business Opportunities: Network with some of the most influential leaders in the Philadelphia region and learn about business opportunities during the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Expert panelists include:

Angela Dowd-Burton: Executive Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity of the City of Philadelphia (Moderator).

Gregory DeShields: Executive Director, PHLDiversity Multicultural Affairs Congress.

Gregory Hinton: Chief Diversity Officer, Democratic National Committee

Frances Jones: Assistant General Manager of Government Affairs, SEPTA.

Tiffany Newmuis: Director of Diversity & Community Engagement, Philadelphia Democratic National Convention Committee.

Wednesday, May 13th

Independence Blue Cross, 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Making Your Next Move Your Best Move, hosted by ULP in conjunction with NExT Philadelphia, features three panels of business experts who will share insights and advice on personal branding, social networking for career advancement, and career and salary negotiations. Guests will leave this event more informed and prepared for their NExT BEST move!

Youth Empowerment Day is a partnership that brings together GEAR UP students and middle managers from our signature Urban Leadership Forum for an exciting day of education, mentoring, and empowerment. Invitation only.

Friday, May 15th

Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

The Home Preservation Workshop, hosted by the Urban League of Philadelphia’s Housing Department and partner Wells Fargo, will tackle the financial and housing setbacks that are prevalent in the Philadelphia region. Attendees can meet face-to-face with Wells Fargo home retention specialists and ULP’s HUD certified counselors for advice and guidance on housing issues. Homeowners facing economic hardships and/or on the verge of losing their home should attend this workshop.

Saturday, May 16th

Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, 5:00 PM – 12:00 AM

The 2015 Empowerment Gala and Scholarship Dinner is only two weeks away! Empowerment Week activities will culminate with the exciting 2015 Empowerment Gala. This year’s theme ”Building Toward the Future” is a celebration of ULP’s 98 years of providing empowering programs that enhance the lives of people in the Philadelphia region and a pledge to continue the legacy and tradition of community service. This black-tie event will recognize over 70 scholarship students who have been committed to empowerment through education and are college bound. The ULP is also proud to honor the following outstanding companies for their service to the community:

Bank of America will receive the Vision Award for its commitment to philanthropy and service in the Philadelphia region.

Eley Electrical Contractors, LLC. will receive the Spirit of Innovation Award for its creation of jobs and opportunities in the community.
