On Friday, Aug. 5 at the Electric Factory, members of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and party people from all over the tri-state area will get a big dose of “Philly LOVE,” courtesy of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (PABJ).

DJ Questlove of the Roots, Kindred the Family Soul, DJ Diamond Kuts and legendary poet Sonia Sanchez will move the crowd during PABJ’s “Philly LOVE” Party, which will be held at the Electric Factory on Aug. 5 from 10:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. Tickets are $25 in advance through Ticketmaster or at the Electric Factory box office; $20 for NABJ conventioneers via Ticketmaster (using the passcode “NABJ”), and $30 at the door.

The party is a fundraiser for the PABJ, which is hosting the NABJ Convention for the first time in 16 years. Because of this, bringing the “Philly LOVE” in a memorable way is a must, said Sarah Glover, PABJ president.

“PABJ is excited to be hosting this year’s NABJ convention. We’re pumped to bring you a “Philly LOVE” Party Friday night. We are bringing Philly to you live and direct – with DJ Questlove of The Roots and DJ Diamond Kuts on the 1’s and 2’s, Sister Sonia Sanchez sharing her words of wisdom, and Kindred the Family Soul representing on the Philly neo-soul love tip… the night is just going to get better and better! Come on out and party with a purpose,” said Glover.

Here is some information about our world-class lineup:

DJ Questlove almost needs no introduction. In addition to being the drummer for the hip-hop collective The Roots, (also known as the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,) Questlove is known around the music world as the creative force behind albums by D’Angelo (Voodoo), Erykah Badu (Baduism) and Common (Like Water for Chocolate). DJ Questlove was also the musical director for the City of Philadelphia’s Wawa Welcome America! Celebration, which entertained hundreds of thousands of people.

Kindred the Family Soul is truly a family affair. Consisting of the married couple of Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon, the neo-soul duo was part of the same Black Lilly Film and Music Festival movement that also includes Jill Scott. The Hidden Beach recording artists have released four albums: Surrender to Love, which included the songs “Stars” and “Far Away”, In This Life Together, which included the single “Where Would I Be (The Question)”, House of Love, and the duo’s latest album, The Arrival, has just been released.

Sonia Sanchez is one of the most important writers in the Black Arts Movement and has written 16 books. In addition to being one the nation’s foremost poets, activists and scholars she was the Laura Carnell Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia. Sanchez has been honored with the Langston Hughes Poetry Award and the Robert Frost Medal for distinguished lifetime service to American poetry.

DJ Diamond Kuts (Tina Durham) is the first and only female mixer to have a slot on Philadelphia radio. She has also gone on tour with headlining artists such as Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj. She is the official DJ for three radio slots on Philadelphia’s Power 99 FM spinning on the morning show, and on Friday and Saturday nights. She has recently been added to BET’s new Hip-Hop show, ‘The Deal’ and featured in the Source, XXL and Hype Hair magazines. She has also made appearances on 106 & Park and Spring Bling, both of BET. Most notably, Kuts is the local face of a Crush Soda campaign.

The PABJ “Philly LOVE” Party is sponsored by the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, National Association of Black Journalists, Multicultural Affairs Congress, NBC10, 6ABC and Transport Workers Union Local 234. Event proceeds will help support student scholarships and PABJ’s community-based programming in Philadelphia. For more event information, visit: www.pabj.org
