The Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, chaired by State Representative Stephen Kinsey held a policy hearing on criminal justice featuring Universal Institute Charter School (UISC) Community Youth Court.
This was the first-ever policy hearing featuring youth.
The young people selected to participate are members of the UICS School and Community Based Youth Court who provided testimony.
Evidence is now overwhelming that services within the youth justice system need to account for the causes of crime in order to effectively reduce the likelihood of reoffending.
Such an ethic within youth justice service delivery not only reduces symptoms and risk within the youth and their families but also is linked to increasing community safety through reductions in reoffending.
Joining the student leaders and the PA Legislative Black Caucus with testimony was Founder of the Youth Court, Francine Daniels and the Principal of Universal Institute Charter School, Jeffrey L. Williams.
