Nicole Johnson-Reece, Executive Director of the Multicultural Affairs Congress (MAC), a division of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) and Julie Coker, PHLCVB Senior Vice President today joined faculty and staff of the Temple University School of Tourism and Hospitality Management and Eileen Miller, mother of the late Tamara J. Gilmore to help expand the scholarship fund. Gilmore was a former MAC board member and business professional in the hospitality and tourism industry. The formal presentation took place on Monday, April 22nd at Speakman Hall (111B) at 3:00 PM.
This year, MAC contributed an additional $5,000 to the Tamara J. Gilmore (TJG) Scholarship Fund to help even more young women obtain a quality education in the hospitality and tourism field. The donation was given in memory of the celebrated hospitality specialist. “MAC is committed to supporting people of color in the hospitality and tourism industry. Today’s donation is a further extension of our investment in the future of the City of Philadelphia,” said Nicole Johnson-Reece, Executive Director of the Multicultural Affairs Congress.
MAC’s contribution will help the TJG fund move one step closer toward endowment status, ensuring scholarship funds will be available to deserving hospitality students for years to come. The scholarship fund is projected to reach an endowment level of $25,000 by the next academic year (2013-2014), to be first awarded to recipients in the 2014-2015 academic year. The family of the late Tamara Gilmore has also been instrumental in helping to secure donations for the fund and promises to continue the legacy of their beloved family member.
As an alumna of Temple University, Tamara was an accomplished business owner and highly skilled in the hospitality industry. She touched many lives and her dedication, focus and commitment to her career was well respected among her peers. Her mother, Ellen Miller is delighted knowing that Tamara’s passion for the industry will continue on through future scholarship recipients.
“Today is so powerful — it’s a dream come true. This is something Tamara and I talked about before she passed. She often wondered how she would be remembered,” said Eileen Miller. “I am grateful to know her memory will live on through this scholarship here at Temple University.”
“The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management has had a long relationship with the Multicultural Affairs Congress and the PHLCVB through joint programs, educational opportunities, internships and job placement,” said Elizabeth H. Barber, associate dean of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University. “We are thrilled that MAC is supporting the efforts to endow this scholarship in the memory of Tamara Gilmore, whose great passion for hospitality and tourism will be shared by the students who benefit from this scholarship fund.”
