The Lenfest Institute for Journalism recently launched the Lenfest Next Generation Fund to help support professional development among journalists of color in the Philadelphia region. The fund will provide awards of up to $1,200 to journalists and a student of color in Philadelphia to attend a professional conference of their choice. This new grant was inspired by the conversations that was held at the Diversity Summit last summer.
To fulfill the Lenfest Institute’s overarching mission of finding sustainable business models for important local journalism, news coverage needs to be reflective, relatable and relevant to diverse communities. To do that, newsrooms need to have members of these diverse communities shaping their coverage. Our aspirational goal with our diversity programming is for 50 percent of working journalists in Philadelphia to be people of color by 2025. The Next Generation Fund will help in our progress.
We will share updates on our work and its efficacy as we continue this important work, and we want your feedback throughout this process.
Applications for the grant program are due by March 11. Journalists that live in the Greater Philadelphia area and student journalists of color who attend a Philadelphia college or university are welcome to apply.
