The 4rd Annual Unity in the Community Block Party will host its free annual celebration in South Philadelphia at 20th and Snyder Avenue on July 30th, 2011. Produced by Unity in the Community President, Anton Moore, this event is a community day of free food, children’s activities, live entertainment, celebrity appearances, a fashion show and award ceremony, and has become the most anticipated celebration of the summer for residents, neighbors and friends in the area.
With a headlining performance by Miami native and hip hop’s proclaimed “baddest chick” Trina, additional guests include Power 99 FM’s DJ Diamond Kuts, Uncle O, State Representative Kenyatta Johnson; Jordan Harris, Executive Director, Philadelphia Youth Commission; and more .
The event aims to empower as well as entertain. There will be an emotional presentation that will shed a dramatic light on the city’s crime epidemic.
“This year our event will have a deeper meaning as we declare a critical call to action to the leaders of this city, local celebrities and prominent public figures, to help us mobilize a much needed stop-the-violence movement in our neighborhood,” says Moore. “What are we doing as citizens to collectively stop the crime in our city? It’s a question I ask my friends and neighbors and I hope this event will raise awareness about this important issue.”
Just as promised in previous years, children can look forward to a variety of activities from face-painting to moon bounces, fun give-aways, cotton candy and more. Live entertainment including a musical tribute in honor of R&B legends Michael Jackson and Teena Marie will take place on a main stage.
The Unity in the Community organization held various fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for the celebration. Philadelphia’s Power 99FM is a media partner and other community members have provided their support.
