Philadelphia real estate attorney Damon K. Roberts, Esq. and The Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia teamed up to make the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday brighter for needy Philadelphia families with a turkey basket giveaway. The giveaway took place on last Saturday at 17th and Reed Streets in South Philadelphia.
“When I was president of The Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia from 2004-05, we gave out 1,000 turkeys and I saw the profound impact the donation makes on families,” said Roberts, owner of Damon K. Roberts and Associates and a 2011 candidate for Philadelphia City Council in the Second Councilmanic District. “Since that time, my family and I do something every year for families in need.
During this current economic recession, a lot of people have very serious needs. I wanted to make sure that we do something special for families in my neighborhood of South and Southwest Philadelphia who want to celebrate Thanksgiving but are short on funds.”
Roberts and The Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia provided 50 vouchers to community and civic leaders and 10 churches in the South Philadelphia area. Most of the churches are part of the South Philadelphia Coalition of Churches, led by Pastor Simon Bouie of Zion AME Church.
It was the responsibility of those community leaders to distribute the vouchers to families in need. The Barristers’ Association, which represents over 1,200 African-American attorneys in the Philadelphia area, is providing the turkey baskets this year.
