26th Annual AIDS Walk Philly & AIDS Run Philly hits the street to raise funds, Step Up Awareness, Oct. 21

26th Annual AIDS Walk Philly and AIDS Run Philly will be presented by Merck on Sunday, October 21, beginning at 7:00 AM for run registration, brings 15,000 people together to raise money for HIV prevention education, public awareness, and HIV care services right here in the Greater Philadelphia Region.

 

Panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt at the base of the Art Museum steps provide powerful visuals, an area of great reflection, and a place to start conversations about the power of the AIDS epidemic. Free, rapid HIV tests will be available on site at the Walk. “1981-Until It’s Over…” AIDS Timeline, a large text and photographic timeline of 30 years of HIV/AIDS history, also brings stark visuals.

 

WHERE: PRESS CHECK-IN AT TABLE AT THE BASE OF THE ART MUSEUM STEPS

 

AIDS Walk Philly begins and ends at Eakins Oval, in front of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The route goes up Kelly Drive and back down Martin Luther King Drive.

 

AIDS Run Philly is a USATF-certified 5K route on Martin Luther King Drive.

 

WHEN: Sunday, October 21, 2012

5 AM: Set up begins (availability for early morning live broadcasts)

7 AM: Run registration begins

7:30 AM: Walk Registration begins

8 AM: AIDS Run Philly begins on Martin Luther King Dr., returns and ends at Eakins Oval

8:30 AM: Opening Ceremony, aerobic warm-up, and awards ceremony for AIDS Run Philly

9 AM: AIDS Walk Philly begins on Kelly Drive and ends at Eakins Oval

12 noon: Walk Concludes

 

NOTE TO PRESS DRIVING TO EVENT: All roads will be closed surrounding Eakins Oval and the River Drives. To gain access, show your Philadelphia press credential to the police. Problem? Every 9½ minutes, someone in the U.S. becomes infected with HIV. Philadelphians can make a difference in the fight against HIV and AIDS by participating in AIDS Walk Philly, which will bring together nearly 15,000 people to raise money for HIV prevention education, public awareness, and HIV care services here in the Greater Philadelphia region.

 

The AIDS Fund grant program supports organizations in the Philadelphia Region that provide AIDS and HIV-related services, education, and prevention including increasing public awareness of HIV/AIDS issues. The 26th Annual AIDS Walk Philly presented by Merck is also sponsored by Wells Fargo, CVS CarePlus, Frito-Lay, NBC10, PGN, and City Paper.
