After receiving a Women of Vision Award, which celebrated generations of progress and power of women from feminist Gloria Steinem on May 16 at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City, Meghan Markle, accompanied by Prince Harry and her mom, Doria Ragland, encountered crazy members of the paparazzi who aggressively pursued the SUV they were riding in. This resulted in the royals heading the NYPD’s 19th precinct where a yellow cab was hailed for them as a decoy. On May 17, the NYPD sent out a statement that said they “assisted the private security team of protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.” There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests. The driver of the yellow cab Prince Harry and Meghan left the precinct in, Jimmie, told a reporter, the couple “looked nervous — and the incident was pretty crazy” He also said they gave him a $50 tip.
After the meal was blessed by Chaplain Robert Rice who also serenaded the moms with a Mother’s Day poem, the Alhambra Ballroom in New York City’s Harlem was jumping with hit tunes from the musical revue “Gladys Song & Verse.” The legendary award winning DJ Hollywood, along with the first Black woman to sit on the Health and Hospital Corp’s board, Mable Everett were in the house. The audience remarked it was a classy and exciting afternoon and the show’s writer and director, Roz, and many guests added the food was delicious! The show’s co-producer Connie Kennedy said soul singer Priceless hit the ball out of the park with songs like Nitty Gritty and Neither One Of Us. Singing all the Pips’ highs and lows was JaZz E Matt, Tyrice Harrell and Maurice Ellerbee, as the audience joined in on the fun, singing and dancing along. The rhythm section featured Jerry Brooks on bass, Artie White on guitar and Franchion Corbett on drums.
TV One is doubling down on its new slate of programming for the newly minted “Date Night Thursdays.” The new series, “Asking for a Friend,” hosted by LisaRaye McCoy, paved the way for the genre, which premiered on the network in February. The night returned May 18 with “The One, “ a competition series hosted by powerhouse couple Kirk and Tammy Franklin. Atlanta bachelor and bachelorette Brent and Ashley have long struggled to find their soulmates. Now, with a little guidance from Kirk and Tammy, Brent and Ashley will embark on a journey filled with sexy suitors and outrageous activities as they seek to find love.
On May 12, Janet Jackson reportedly took her tour to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Tom Cruise was in the audience. The Top Gun: Maverick star met with the superstar songstress backstage to catch up. Cruise was one of the latest members of Jackson’s star-studded audience which has included his ex-wife Katie Holmes, Ciara, Angela Bassett and Questlove.
