Putting #Oscarsowhite to shame, on February 27 in Santa Monica, California, Idris Elba won the Spirit Award for Supporting Actor for the drama “Beast of No Nation.” The British Black actor brought co-star Abraham Attah on stage for his acceptance speech. Attah, who was a street vendor in Africa when the film’s director discovered him, later won the Spirit Award in the Best Actor category………
It proved to be a busy weekend for Idris Elba. On February 26, he joined actors Michael Ealy, Boris Kodjoe, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Evan Ross, “Rocky” icon Carl Weathers and more, at the packed Mr. C Beverly Hills Hotel to kick off the Fourth Annual Icon Mann Event saluting Black Men in Hollywood. The event took place in the hotel’s Starlight Ballroom. Richard Roundtree, who rose to fame for his portrayal of “Shaft” in the 1970s’ and currently stars on BET’s “Being Mary Jane,” was one of the honorees……….
Possible New York City Mayoral candidate R. Donahue Peebles and his wife Katrina, were among the glittering crowd at the kick-off cocktail party for New York Mission Society’s annual “Champions for Children” Benefit will take place April 13 at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. The fabulous kick-off was held at the Park Avenue home of Martin and Jean Shafiroff, who is chairing the gala along with the Peebles. “I am deeply honored to again serve as Gala Chair to support the New York City Mission Society,” said Jean, whose book “Successful Philanthropy: How To Make A Life By What You Give, “ will be out on March 8, “This event will raise funds to support programs that are changing the lives of children, young adults and families.” Other VIPs at the cocktail soiree included Elsie McCabe Thompson, president of New York Mission Society, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Rita Cosby, Stanley Rumbough, Randi Schatz, Dawn Marie Grannum, Shannon Hales, James Hester and Lieba Nesis………

Coleman Entertainment Group client Vivica A. Fox rocked the red carpets on February 28 at the Weinstein Oscar Screening and then Kevin Hart’s Oscar Salute Party. The bombshell wore a stunning plum JMendel gown accessorized with Helen Yarmark and Candy Ice jewels. Vivica is making it known that 2016 is the “Year of the Fox” as she prepares for the summer release of “Independence Day: Resurgence” where she will reprise her role as Jasmine. And she’ll be back when “Empire” returns on March 30 as Candace, Cookie’s fierce and feisty sister……..
According to Variety, Oprah Winfrey lost a small fortune when Weight Watcher’s stock plummeted February 26. CNN Money reported that shares of Weight Watchers dipped 30 percent after the lifestyle brand announced a quarterly loss of $11 million. Oprah’s stake fell by $27 million in a side effect. Oprah signed on to play a big part in Weight Watcher’s public image last October when she acquired a 10 percent stake in the company………
