Okay. The internet and Facebook are abuzz with many complaints about the male characters in Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls.” The “Colored Guys,” with the exception of Hill Harper’s police officer character, have been compared to the disparaging male figures in “The Color Purple” and “Waiting To Exhale.” I asked veteran heart throb, Richard Lawson, who plays Loretta Devine’s character’s trifling boyfriend Frank, in the film, what he thinks about all the controversy. This is what he said. Richard told me: “Well, here’s the thing. First of all, it’s multidimensional. We’re still dealing with African Americans. We have dealt with negative images for entire centuries. There is a kind of intolerance to the images of Black people and Black men on screen. Over the time, expectation for us as people, made us image sensitive. It made us hypersensitive to anything derogatorry. But, if we’re not careful, we cannot create any type of art that challenges or provokes or anything speaking from a particular writer’s truth. Rembrandt taught us you have to create light and dark. In this film, you see the men that were in the play in 1975, who were referred to, but, you didn’t see them. Tyler created light. Zake (Ntozake Shange) created light in 1975. If we’re not careful, we won’t have any kind of voice at all to challenge ourselves.” Okay, this is a “Colored Guy” talking. Do you all get it now?
