New York City’s first couple, Beyonce’ and Jay-Z, were out and about recently in the Big Apple. The couple enjoyed a quiet night out with Bey’s mother, Tina Knowles and friends, at Giorgia Ristorante in Battery Park City. Beyonce’ wore Erika Pena Obama earrings which retail for $28 in silver and $32 in gold. The coosome twosome also joined pal Gwyneth Paltrow at Rosemary’s in the West Village on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Beyonce’ and Jay-Z have lost their bid to trademark daughter Blue Ivy’s name. A judge rejected their request because a party planning company in Boston has been using the name since 2009. Sources say Bey wanted to open a children’s boutique with her daughter’s moniker.

In the new upcoming movie “Flight” starring Denzel Washington, the Oscar winner plays a pilot hiding a dark personal secret that threatens to end his career. Denzel had to dig down deep for this role as a recovering ex-smoker, as he picks back up the habit in order to bring the character to life. The question is did anyone lift up Denzel’s shirt to see if there’s a nicotine patch hiding up under there? But, let’s hear it for girl power as his co-stars Tamara Tunie of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and Ms. Fancy herself, Garcelle Beauvais, bring it with compelling performances as the women holding it down in the film. This fabulous must-see film is turbulent at the very least keeping you on the edge of your seat. “Flight” opens Friday, November 2 at a theater near you. Go see it!

“Being Mary Jane” star Gabrielle Union celebrated her 40th birthday a week early on October 22 by hosting a toast to the Gold Life, commemorating the launch of Courvoisier Gold at PH-D in the Dream Downtown Hotel in New York City. Guests dined on hors d’oeurves and savored signature Courvoisier Gold Cocktails created especially for the occasion by celebrity chef Roble Ali. All partygoers danced well into midnight with the birthday girl leading the pack.

Angela Guy, L’Oreal USA SVP of Diversity and Inclusion, has been named by Savoy Magazine as one of its 2012 Top Influential Women in Corporate America. A special issue will showcase a cross section of successful business leaders and executives who have made positive influences on their companies and surrounding communities. “We all have the power to make a difference,” said Guy. “I truly believe that all things happen for a reason and if you have the passion and drive you can achieve your dreams.”

Everyone knows that kids love to somersault. But did you know that kids also love Somersault Snacks, a new line of healthy snacks that kids performing at the Harlem School of the Arts Fall benefit in New York City literally flipped for? The good folks at Somersault Snacks donated cases of the new product to the Harlem School and also for the gift bags. It even had me jumping for joy.
