Celebrating the impact and journey of people in the recovery community
To prepare the “Cinderellas” and “Cinderfellas” for the celebration, Minds of Men founders Derrick McKnight and Rob Hayes are collecting suits, gowns and shoes to outfit party goers for the ball. Barbers will be available for those who need shape ups and stylists will be there to assist women with their hair. The ball will be held on Saturday, January 5,
Community supporters are donating outfits for the attendees. Collected clothing will be distributed to ticket holders on Dec. 21, 2018 at 1pm at Stop and Surrender, 2522 W. Huntingdon St.
“With the purchase of a ticket, you get to pick out a gown or a suit,” said Hayes. “(This is a way to help participants) prepare to prosper. Beyond the ball, men can use their suits to go on job interviews.” For many of the ladies who never went to a prom, to wear a gown and go to a big dance means a lot to them.
The Recovery Ball provides an evening of food, fun and fellowship featuring an awards ceremony, comedy showcase, vendors, contests and more. This party has a purpose. The awards segment will recognize the work of community leaders who are giving back and strengthening the community. Honorees include Sheriff Jewell Williams and Rev. Dr. Simmons from Why Not Prosper. The keynote speaker will be Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. The ball will address empowerment goals of developing a voting base and getting job leads through the information vendors and networking opportunity.
Those attending may be recovering from any of a range of circumstances substance abuse or a mental or physical condition. According to McKnight, the takeaway message for the ball and for the organization Minds of Men is, “Be a blessing to someone else.”
