Debbie Allen was honored at the 73rd Annual Emmy ‘s with the Governors Award. She is first Black woman to receive the honor.
Debbie Allen made history at Sunday night’s Emmys as she became the first Black woman to receive the Governors Award.
Allen was honored Sunday evening for her contributions spanning 4-decades to television as an actress, writer, producer, director, dancer and choreographer.
Allen gave an inspiring speech. She even “STOPPED THE CLOCK”
“Turn that clock off,” Allen said as she launched into her speech accepting the Governors Award. “I’m not paying any attention to it.” She added she was “trembling with gratitude and grace and trying not to cry … it’s taken a lot of courage to be the only woman in the room most of the time.” She urged a younger generation to “Tell your stories … it’s your turn.” The crowd cheered — when you have her career as an actor, dancer, choreographer and activist, you’re allowed to ignore the playoff music. BUT NOT EVERYONE IS DEBBIE ALLEN
