BBC America’s critically acclaimed crime series “Luther” will makes its anticipated return over four nights in September. The drama stars Idris Elba (“Pacific Rim,” “Thor”) as John Luther, a role that won him a Golden Globe Best Actor award. The series third four-part season finds the near-genius detective struggling to cope with his own demons.
He’s back with two conflicting crimes to investigate while his righthand man is called away on another case, and has to contend with a ruthless ex-cop determined to bring him down. This season, Sienna Guillory (“Resident Evil,” “Love Actually”) has been cast as Mary Day, a potential lover interest for Luther.
Idris Elba says of the third series: “He’s gone through a lot of trauma. Each time you go through anything bad in your life, it makes you a bit more reflective, and it definitely scars you in some way — in this series he’s looking for peace. But a lot happens in this season… I don’t know where it’s going to leave Luther. He’s not a fragile man, but he might end up becoming fragile after what he goes through. This series is very much about Luther trying to change his life and get to the finish line.”
The four-part BBC and BBC America co-production is created by Neil Cross and executive produced by Phillippa Giles.
“Luther” will air in the US September 3-6 at 10pm ET/PT.
