Superintendent Tony B. Watlington, Sr., Ed.D. has announced the Strategic Planning team members. This is the final phase of his three-phase approach to laying a strong foundation to improving academic outcomes for all students and achieving the Board’s Goals and Guardrails. Phase one Listening and Learning sessions, together with the output from the Transition Team, will inform phase three — the development of a new five-year strategic plan for the School District of Philadelphia.
“I am excited about working together with the strategic planning team to create an ambitious and comprehensive plan that will chart our path toward achieving the Board of Education’s Goals and Guardrails, and becoming the fastest improving large, urban school district in the country,” Watlington said.
Members of the Strategic Planning team can be found on the new Strategic Plan website. Each member will belong to one of the three distinct bodies that represent the wide variety of perspectives and diverse expertise of the District’s community that will drive the Strategic Plan development, including:
Leadership Team
A group of 25 central office and school leaders selected to serve as the decision-making body for the Strategic Plan.
Steering Committee
A group of 60 appointed central office staff, school-based staff and parents who applied and were selected from across Philadelphia, and students that generate the content of the Strategic Plan which is reviewed by the Leadership Team.
Advisory Groups:
Groups of community members who applied and were selected to provide critical insights and feedback as pieces of the Strategic Plan are developed. The Steering Committee will engage Advisory Groups of parents/guardians, principals, teachers, school support staff, central office staff and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council and union leadership.
Throughout the strategic planning process, there are key milestones that will be shared publicly on or near the dates below:
January 23, 2023: Launch Mission, Vision, and Core Values Survey launch
March 23, 2023: Propose Theory of Action and Priorities to inform the plan
April 27, 2023: Share Goals and Strategies to inform the final plan due
May 26, 2023: Seek Board of Education approval of the Strategic Plan
“I am extremely grateful to each and every individual who has engaged in the transition process so far,” Watlington said. “I also remain committed to keeping stakeholders informed throughout the planning process and encourage everyone to be on the lookout for additional ways to engage in the process.”
One way stakeholders can engage in the process is to participate in the Mission, Vision, and Core Values survey when it is released around January 23, 2023. The Mission, Vision, and Core Values is a critical starting point in the development of the Strategic Plan.
The final strategic plan will be released in spring 2023. To follow the ongoing development of the Strategic Plan, visit: www.philasd.org/strategicplan.
