NEWARK, NJ – The City of Newark’s African Commission, in observance of Women’s History Month, will hold a ceremony to celebrate the second Annual “African Woman Day in New Jersey” on Friday, March 18, at 5 PM, in the Municipal Council Chamber at City Hall, at 920 Broad Street.

The event’s keynote speakers will be Sophia A. Nelson, a nationally-known opinion writer, columnist, and author of the new book “Black Woman Redefined,” which examines the inner lives of successful black women; Eva Shaw-Taylor, a contracts specialist/contracting officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and Osas Ighodaro, a Nigerian-American actress and community activist.

The second annual “African Woman Day in New Jersey” is designed to unite women of African descent in the Garden State, to celebrate their achievements, and to empower future generations.

This year’s theme is “Honoring the African woman for her Contribution to the World.” The celebration will also include a traditional cultural performance.
