As I walk through the streets of Philadelphia, I see the disparities, gentrification and changes that occur daily. There are times when I wonder what it would take to change the negative in our city into something positive. The question is: How can I help beautify Philly? I suggest you look in the mirror every day and reflect on all you have accomplished, as well as what needs to be accomplished when it comes to improving the spaces around you.
We can begin beautifying Philly individually, with ourselves. Besides educating our children about right and wrong, good and bad, are we also acting as strong, mature role models? Are we replacing parenting with friendship? As a way to keep within our boundaries, I often remind my daughter that we are not friends.
Parental roles seem to have fallen by the wayside in modern society. Every day, violence occurs in our city. It is often children who commit these crimes.
So again I ask, what can you do to beautify Philly — physically and emotionally? I believe that by coming together and working together, we can provide our children with a stable, sound, comfortable, secure environment where they can have fun, enjoy each other, and do things. Unfortunately, unlike myself when I was growing up, many children today have no idea what this is like.
Philadelphia also needs spiritual beautification. In order to make real change, we must fall to our knees in prayer so that when we come together collectively, the change becomes evident. Philly is known as the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection — but are we actually feeling love? Are we sharing affection? Selfishness seems to be at the forefront of many people’s minds.
So take a moment with me today and say a prayer for our children — all the children of Philly. Say a prayer for the parents — all the parents of Philly. And by all means, pray for yourself, because if we are to see a change in Philly, it will take all of us together as we begin the process of mending, molding, and forgiving. I need your help to beautify Philly again!
Philadelphia is such an awesome place to live: the beauty, the history, and also all the memories I have of this city. Despite this, Philadelphia is in need of radical change these days. What can you do today? How can you help? Do something different today and help beautify Philly; we need your help. The children of this city are in need of your help. Please say a prayer and help me as we walk together in solidarity to make a difference in Philly and continue to change it through beautification on several levels. Until next time…. PEACE!
