Years ago when Jada Chambers wanted spiral curls, she traditionally resorted to setting her hair on plastic or foam rollers, or meticulously curled small sections of her hair with a curling iron. She dealt with the heat of a curling iron that caused damaged hair and did not provide consistent results. And the traditional roller set was uncomfortable to sleep in. Now instead of reaching for a curling iron when she is seeking a set of sleek, bouncy spiral curls, Jada uses more technically evolved styling tools.

Modern technology has made it easier to get just about any hairdo you desire. And there are an array of available styling tools that will allow you to achieve your desired goal. Those tools provide solutions if you want sleek, bouncy spiral curls since they are heat-free and can be worn comfortably while sleeping.

The next time you consider a curly hairstyle, instead of reaching for your curling iron, try one of these gentler methods instead.

Rollers

There are several roller options. Consider avoiding the old-fashioned sponge ones that draw moisture from black hair. Magnetic rollers come in a wide range of sizes so even short locks can be curled with this gentle method. Use these after you shampoo and condition. The larger the roller, the straighter and more volume you hair will have. Just make sure your hair is completely dry before removing them so that your curls are frizz-free. If you prefer a softer roller, choose a satin-covered sponge or foam type. Because some are simply a simple sponge curler with a satin covering in the middle.

Flexi-rods

Create pretty spirals with flexi-rods, which are easy to use. Wrap your hair around the outside of the flexi-rods instead of placing your hair inside the curler. Your hair can be damp or dry for this process. Just make sure you wrap your ends all the way around the rod and that they lie smoothly against it — otherwise, they may look untidy when you remove the rods.

Straw Set

Straws are not just for drinking. Just as the name suggests, this curling method is created with drinking straws. It’s perfect for the woman who wants a long-lasting, well-defined hairstyle. They curls that result will be very small and tight. When dry, they can be separated for a fuller look. To maintain, cover your straw set curls at night with a big bonnet, and in the morning, shake them out.

Curlformers

From spirals to bouncy waves, curlformers create gorgeous results. One of the advantages using these modern rollers is that you can control the size of the curl. Curlformers come in several lengths and widths to accommodate a range of hair textures. If you prep your hair with a holding mousse or setting lotion, the result will be curls that last and last.

Pin Curls

Although considered an old-fashioned curling method, pin curls are a great option. They work best when the hair is dry and already straightened (either by relaxing, blow drying or wrapping). Just take small to medium sections of hair, wrap them in a circular pattern, press to your head and pin in place. For springy curls, let them set for several hours or overnight.

Rag Curls

Rag curls, like pin curls, are another inexpensive and effective curling method. All you need are old, clean rags that you have around the house. If you have an old tee-shirt that you’re going to throw out? Don’t do it — it’s a perfect curl-maker. Cut them into a 12-inch strips, place a rag at the end of a section of hair, roll it up and tie the ends of the rag in place. If you want curly ends, wrap midway up the hair shaft, or roll it to the scalp for complete curls.

Bantu Knots

For a range of curl volume, consider wearing Bantu knots. They can be created whether your hair is wet or dry. If your hair is wet, the result will be more defined and tighter curls. Or, if you prefer to manipulate hair when dry, Bantu knots will result in fuller, looser curls. They also have another benefit. Bantu knots can be worn as a hairstyle style for several days and then released for a completely different curly look.
