The answer to a nagging question: Why isn’t my hair growing?

You are peering into a mirror and carefully examining your hair.   The inspection tells you that your hair is not growing, but most likely it is. However, if it appears your hair is breaking off at a faster rate than it grows and you don’t see any length gain, there may be underlying reasons.

If any of the following reasons seem familiar, you might want to review your haircare behaviors and begin promoting healthy practices that ensure you keep your hair growing.

Chemically over treating your hair

Overlapping relaxers, aggressive coloring and applying too many chemicals to the hair all play a role in causing damage to Black hair.  It will still grow from the scalp, but it often breaks off at the ends or requires a drastic cut to get rid of unhealthy sections.

If you are a “kitchen beautician” and undertake any of these hair practices at home, it is possible your hair is over-processed. Despite your penchant for being a do-it-yourselfer, it is usually better to obtain chemical services in a salon from a capable and certified professional.

Trimming much too often

Some women believe consistently trimming their hair leads to longer hair.  The truth is, healthy hair doesn’t require as many trims as unhealthy hair, which might require frequent trims that remove an inch or more. Hair grows an average of ¼ to ½ inch per month. So if you care for your hair properly, trimming more than a ½ inch every few months will be not be necessary.

Inconsistently conditioning

Dry, brittle hair can happen to you, or anyone for that matter, if you are not meticulous about conditioning. Black hair, depending upon texture, often requires more moisture. It is a good practice to apply a moisturizer as needed. It might be daily or several times weekly, or a monthly deep conditioning, or conditioning after every shampoo. It also might be a good idea to apply a leave-in conditioner. If you don’t have a hair moisturizing regimen, it might be a good idea to begin one.

Not maintaining protein structure

Healthy hair requires a good moisture level and a suitable protein balance to remain strong. The strength of your hair may be compromised by the use of chemicals or the practice of harsh hair routines, making protein more important. For instance, every relaxer or touch-up, color process and even flat iron press impacts the strength of your hair strands’ cuticles. Weak hair usually breaks off after becoming thinner and losing its elasticity over time.

Addressing Traction Alopecia

Tight hair styles may cause serious damage to your hairline. In some cases, the damage is permanent, killing your hair follicles forever. The condition just described is traction alopecia, which will appear as a sparse or receding hairline. It is a condition, depending upon its stage, it can be corrected or may unfortunately be irreversible. Consult a doctor if you suspect this condition. Braids that are too tight, ponytails that place stress on your hairline, and suffocating weaves are just a few hair styles you might consider abandoning or at least revising. Even if you change your mindset, remember a style change is not enough. Sleek, straight hair or braided extensions that are pulled too tightly may look good, but healthy hair is about much more than appearance.
