Valentine’s Day beauty guide helps you get your sexy on

By Leah Fletcher

Whether you have a date planned for this Valentine’s Day weekend or just a night out with the girls, you undoubtedly will want to be the one everyone notices. If you want to make a statement, this Valentine’s Day beauty guide has everything you need to complete your look.

Capitalize on your lashes

With the right mascara and the following tips you can have alluring eye lashes. Start by curling your lashes. Gently tweak lashes at the roots and then along the length. Apply mascara by wiggling the wand back and forth at the roots to deposit as much of the product as possible before pulling the wand straight up. To make lashes look long and separated, apply three coats of mascara—but comb through the mascara while it is still wet with a clean, dry spooley brush.

Strive for smooth, luscious lips

To keep your lips looking smooth and glossy, exfoliate by rubbing on a lip balm with a touch of alpha hydroxyl acid. Remember to always moisturize by applying a balm containing petrolatum, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, or ceramides. Avoid waxy formulas because their ingredients may not penetrate as well as anything heavily flavored or fragranced, which can make chapping even worse. To add color, try a tinted balm or check out long-wearing lip colors.

Invigorate your complexion

Exfoliate your skin once or twice a week with an at-home peel containing glycolic alpha hydroxyl, or salicylic acid. After the first peel, your skin will look shiner and more taut, and after a few weeks it will look even better. Make adjustments to this regimen given your skin type—normal, oily or a combination of normal and oily skin.

Go light on the foundation

During the winter when skin tends to be dry and dull, less foundation is definitely more. Try a creamy formula with light-reflecting particles. Your face will look much more awake if you can still see your skin. It’s a good idea to apply it with your fingers so it can melt into the skin.”

Give scented body oil a try

For smooth, glowing skin all over, switch from your normal lotion and apply a lightly fragranced body oil.

Apply fragrance like a pro

Spritz fragrance on your pulse points, which give off heat and release your scent: your wrists, inner elbows, temple, neck hollow, behind the ears, and behind the knees. General rules: apply no more than two drops of perfume, three sprays of eau de perfume, and four hits of eau de toilette. And because you become desensitized to the smell of a fragranceover time, resist the urge to load it on. It’s a good idea to stay with the amount you used when you initially wore the fragrance.

Give yourself a facial flush

Add a pop of color to your face by adding some blush. Don’t underestimate how good blush can make you look. A cream formula looks the most natural, goes on sheer, and it is easy to blend. To find your best shade, gently pinch your cheeks and match the blush to the color you get.

Select a sexy hairstyle

There are an array of hairstyles that will give you a cosmopolitan air on a special night. If you want to wear something that allows you to pull your hair back and wear it down, try a side sweep. Consider a sexy side bun, a French twist or modern versions of African hairstyles and braids that range from Senegalese twists to free-flowing afros.

Aim for understated nails

It’s a good idea to wear a simple manicure and tone down the nail art. Use a polish with a natural shade or a bold color, perhaps red to symbolize the color of Valentine’s Day, with a shiny top coat. Go for an understated, sleek and accented look. (See DYI Manicure steps)

Accent your décolletage

If you plan on showing a little skin, don’t forget your décolletage, or cleavage as it is often referred to. Be mindful that because there are few oil glands on your chest and cleavage, they are more susceptible to brown spots and also happen to be more sensitive. So, while your favorite anti-aging cream will work wonders, use it here just twice a week. For a special occasion, sweep an illuminating body powder over your collarbones to compliment your dazzling look.

Simple steps for great DIY Manicure

While you are treating yourself to a Valentine’s Day beauty program, remember it is easy to refresh your hands and give yourself a great manicure by following a few easy steps.

1. Prep

Scrub your hands to slough off dry skin and reveal the healthy skin below. Dry, rough skin can cause your hands to look older and date your look as well.

2. Prime

Soften your cuticles with a cuticle cream and gently push them back away from the nail bed. Apply hand moisturizer liberally and massage it into your hands.

3. Moisturize

Use a hand moisturizer regularly to help protect your hands and prevent them from appearing aged. You also should avoid soaps that dry your skin.

4. Polish

Wipe your nails with nail polish remover. By doing this before adding polish, it allows you to eliminate any oil so the polish can adhere correctly. This will help your manicure last longer. Complete the process with a clear polish. If you are applying color, do it now. Once your color is dry, apply a top coat to protect your manicure.

Well-manicured hands complement your style and present a much pulled together look. This regimen is low-maintenance and can be undertaken weekly for easy upkeep. The addition of high quality, quick-drying products can make this process even easier. Don’t forget to touch up as needed, to keep your DIY manicure looking fresh.
