What could be a better Mother’s day gift for your mother, than a day at the spa? Mothers do it all. They juggle work, kids, the household and more. And because of all their responsibilities, they don’t always take time out for themselves. Mother’s Day comes once a year, so treating your mother to a full day of pampering at a local spa will give her the rest and relaxation she so desperately needs and deserves. It also is a great gift.
Spa menus scream services like “Mother’s Delight” or “Queen for a Day” and also include others like full body massages, classic facial and spa manicures and pedicures to rejuvenate the skin and soothe tired feet. This sounds like just what you mom needs. However, there is just one problem. You’re strapped for cash. Unfortunately, the price of those delicious spa services are beyond your current budget. To resolve your dilemma, consider providing your mother with a do it yourself in-home spa day. She will, no doubt, receive the much-needed pampering she deserves, without hurting your pocketbook.
An in-home spa day is something you and your mother can enjoy together. To recreate the spa experience, an in-home spa day should include exercise, healthy food, a pampering spa treatment, rest, and time to get inspired. Here are some ideas to help you create an in-home spa day that will help restore your mother’s spirit, as well as your own.
Develop a plan for your in-home spa day—Think about what your mother would want from an in-home spa day—just like you two were going to a real spa. Does your mother need to rest, relax and renew? Think about her waking up naturally and focusing on quieter forms of exercise and soothing spa treatments. If you think she might want to get energized during your home spa day, create a more vigorous schedule. Maybe it’s time to take on that three-mile hike. Remember you are doing this together.
Organize your spa essentials—Pull together some of the things that say “spa”—robes and slippers, spa CDs, candles, clean sheets and towels, exercise clothing, a favorite exercise DVDs, a body scrub, facial products, and items for a manicure and pedicure. This will help inspire you as you plan your mother’s spa day.
Prepare healthy meals—Create your in-home spa menus with healthy foods that will help your mother eat for energy—an egg-white omelet with vegetables for breakfast, stir-fired chicken breast and vegetables for lunch, lentil soup and salad for dinner. Prepare your meals ahead or make that part of the fun of your in-home spa day with mom.
Incorporate exercise into the day’s activities—You and your mother can take a walk around your neighborhood, bike ride or watch an exercise DVD. Do whatever works for her. How much and what kind of exercise you do will depend upon your mother’s current fitness level.
Don’t forget a spa treatment—One of the easiest home spa treatments is a body scrub and hot bath. This would be a good thing to do for your mother in the afternoon. Let her rest afterwards. You can also give her a home facial, a manicure and a pedicure.
Quiet time is essential—Give your mom some quiet time. You don’t have to provide her with a floor cushion or try to mediate. Sitting quietly and soaking in what is going on around you for a few moments will do the trick.
Seek inspiration during your in-home spa day—Spas usually have lectures on health and wellness, so you might want to provide your mom with a book of inspirational poetry for a few quiet meditative moments.
Take time to bond and “feel the love”—Your in-home spa day is about extending love and kindness to your mother. At end of the day, make sure you are both feeling the love.
Because this day is all about mom, it’s acceptable to let her choose what she might like to do for the remainder of the day. Perhaps, she would like to spend some time reading or shopping at her favorite mall or indulging in dessert at her favorite local bakery. Remember, the whole point of Mother’s Day is to let mom relax, so whatever she’s comfortable with is fine. In the end, she’ll be glad you did it and will luxuriate in the memory for an eternity.
