Gone are the days where senior women are locked into blue dye and short hair cuts, the latter intended to hide thinning hair. In fact, conventional wisdom is out the window when it comes to senior hair care. Current trends, due to the great advances in hair colors, wigs and weaves, provide women with an array of hairstyle options as they approach their golden years.
“Women are seeking to enhance their appearance as they age,” in the opinion of Dr. Lola Conwell, owner of Lola’s Looking Glass, a full service salon in the Oak Lane section of Philadelphia.
“Long is in, short is in and you can be as gray as you want to be” said Dr. Conwell, who believes the hairstyle you choose as you approach the golden years, speaks to your preference as much as it ever did in your younger days.
There are ways to grow gray gracefully, explained Dr. Conwell, an industry veteran of more than 40 years. However, if you are strongly opposed to going gray, you can color your own hair. There are those women that believe, said Dr. Conwell, “covering the gray is a great vehicle for maintaining a youthful appearance.”
And because you are aging doesn’t mean you have to abandon longer hair. If it suits your facial shape, keeping your hair long will make the transition to your senior years easier. If you decide to pursue a shorter cut to make hair care simple, she advised that it be done gradually instead of drawing drastic changes in your life. She also suggested changes be made in consultation with your stylist.
“My job as a stylist is to give a client what she asks for, but in conjunction with what I know she needs, “said Dr. Conwell, who went on to explain that a good stylist can help you make decisions about color, how to handle graying, and if you have thinning hair, make suggestions to style your hair in a way that make its less obvious.
However, styling your own hair may be difficult to handle, if you don’t want to schedule routine hair appointments. As you age, washing or styling your hair on your own may become harder. Some hair care experts advise that if you are having difficulty washing your hair in the shower or tub, a handheld shower head is a great accessory to add to your bathroom. You may even use it in conjunction with a shower seat to make grooming your hair safe and comfortable.
Another benefit to a good hair stylist is that you may schedule them to visit you and take care of your hair at home. Dr. Conwell noted salons are handicapped accessible and are able to accommodate senior clients with mobility issues.
Dr. Conwell admits that she touts the experience of the industry’s professionals, especially in her role as President of the Pennsylvania Association of Modern Beautician and Cosmetologist, a trade organization that has existed for 67 years. “Industry professionals are equipped to meet every clients need and have served faithfully. Dr. Conwell punctuates that point with a story about of a 98-year-old client she has served for many years and who has never missed a scheduled appointment.
