Prom season is almost here. It is that time of year to confirm a date, buy the dress, order the limo, buy the tickets and plan the night. While it still may be weeks or months away, to be truly prepared, it’s smart to start planning now.

According to Lisa Phillips, an experienced prom dress designer and dressmaker, it’s time to finalize all the details. The former family and consumer science teacher offers students the ultimate prom checklist:

• Check with school officials for the official prom rules and dress code.

• Check your favorite fashion blogs and create a Pinterest inspiration board with all of your favorite fashion.

• Budget and save: ask your parents what they are willing to spend or start saving funds from your part-time job.

• Consider charitable organizations that organize prom dress give-away programs or consignment shops with new or slightly used high-end merchandise.

• Buy your dress. It’s better to get it early to plan for alterations, if necessary.

• Make reservations for hair, makeup, flowers, photos, transportation, dinner and the boutonnière.

Getting a dress gets harder and harder to find when “the date” is rapidly approaching.

“Each department store depletes its stock by May and many of the online stores run out of the most popular dresses in, what seems like, only your size” explained Phillips, noting that many stores are like “ghost towns of prom dress dreams” as that month approaches.

Same rules apply to shopping for a tux.

Depending on whether the prom-goer gets their hair and makeup done, or if they do it themselves, the planning is different.

“It’s a good idea to start by finding a picture of the desired look,” explained Davis, who owns the Leah Davis Salon in West oak Lane. The photo, she said, will help you or the stylist create a platform to begin from to achieve your preferred hairstyle.

When planning to get your hair and makeup done, it is important to make an appointment at least a month in advance. When it comes to the final weeks before your prom, appointments will be difficult to schedule, according to Davis. For that perfect prom look, practice is crucial. You can perfect your look by having your stylist or yourself practice doing your hair and makeup a week or two in advance. This also guarantees that the ultimate prom look won’t fail.

The way you show up to prom is just as important as anything else. Make sure you book your ride in advance, according to Phillips.

The most traditional and possibly most important preparation for the prom is a date.  You might elect to go with friends, a boyfriend or girlfriend, an arranged date or even by yourself. Nevertheless, it is important that your dating circumstance is planned. Between confirming your prom date and getting ready with your friends, you don’t want to be unprepared.

The prom, for some, signals the culmination of an academic year. It is a shining moment that lifts the stressful burden of final exams and signals the start a happy and fun event.
