Obtaining a creative or unique hair style can sometimes be difficult for customers, especially because the most unique styles often require harsh products and styling techniques. However, salon owner Tyisha Williams in University City, says that creating a unique hairstyle can be healthy and even beneficial to the hair, if the proper techniques are used.
Williams, who has been doing hair for almost a decade now, specializes in creating unique hairstyles for clients in search of something creative and trendy. By using synthetic hair as well as soft pressing techniques and eliminating hard holding products, Williams is able to create styles that are healthier for her clients.
About 75 percent of Williams’ clients are relaxer free, so the majority of her clients come to her for an updated version of the press and curl or for what she calls a “protective hairstyle.” Williams eliminates the use harsh holding sprays and spritz and instead suggests that clients maintain their soft curls with pomade, which is a much healthier option. “One of the ways that most people cause damage to their hair is by using harsh chemical products and applying too much heat”, says Tyisha. By using pomade instead of a product that makes the hair hard, even clients who add extensions are able to achieve a natural look.
And while there are ways to make some styles healthier, there are styles that are just damaging altogether, such as bleaching or gluing in extensions. “There have been times when I had to tell a client that a particular style would damage their hair”, she says. “But most clients appreciate that. A stylist who didn’t care would just give them what they ask for”.
Nicholas Mane N’ Tress Hair Salon is located in the University City section of the city and provides clients with a quiet and comfortable atmosphere, as well as fast service. “Most styles take about 45 minutes to an hour to achieve,” Tyisha says. “And I try to make sure that all of my clients leave happy with a style that no one else will have”.
The salon is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 10 AM-6 PM. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 215-382-6826 or visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ManelyNic.
