There are a variety of innovative methods African American women use extensions to twist their hair. The most common are Kinky Twists, Senegalese Twists and Havana twists.  However, it’s the Havana Twists hairstyle that is gaining in popularity.

Havana twits are large, kinky twists created by using Havana hair extensions. Havana hair looks similar to kinky, natural hair. It is lightweight and may be styled in buns or ponytails, or just to wear long.

Since Box braids presently are very trendy, the Havana Twists offer a great alternative to traditional braided hairstyles, and most often appears more natural than other hair extension hairstyles because the hair used is seamless and blends perfectly with natural hair.

The Havana hair is a soft and highly-textured, man-made hair fiber that is created to blend well with a range of natural hair textures. It is created to be long-lasting and re-useable. It may be washed and treated in the same manner as natural hair. And, natural oils, co-washing and water-spritzing don’t negatively impact the hair product.

Havana twists offer the following benefits:

•  As a protective hair style, Havana Twists protect the ends of the hair strands from being exposed to the environment.

•  Because Havana Twists are made of light-weight synthetic hair, they alleviate the strain on the roots of the hair, caused by heavier hair extensions.

•  Because Havana Twists are chunky each individual twists holds a larger amount of hair. This lessens the strain usually caused by small extensions like “micros” or “individual” braids or twists.

Many consider Havana Twists very similar to Marley Twists. Although Havana Twists can be installed with Marley Braid hair or Havana Twist hair, the major difference is each parted section in the Havana twist is larger and requires one piece of Havana hair. Using Marley hair would require two or more pieces. To create Havana Twists the number of required hair packs will be determined by the thickness of your hair, and the desired density and fullness of the look you want to create.

A good braiding salon will help you select a range of hair style options.  YouTube also offers an array of instructional videos for do-it-yourselfers.
