Do I want a new hairstyle? Do I need a new hairstyle? How about hair extensions? Is it a look worth exploring? There are scores of questions you ask when considering a new hairstyle. If you decide on hair extensions, select the best hair extensions, also called weave, for your particular needs. By doing so, your extensions will look more realistic and give you a more satisfactory experience.
When choosing hair extensions you might want to take several factors into consideration.
Choosing high quality hair
Weave hair can be pricy, so choose with care. Most weave hair originates in Asia and can be processed to take on virtually any appearance. Black women who want high quality weave hair should look for indications like “100 percent human hair” and “Remy hair”. Remy is considered one of the highest quality weave/extensions a woman can buy, according to Catherine Hicks of Ultra Hair, an on-line retailer that specializes in virgin Indian Remy hair extensions.
While there are various types of hair available, Indian hair is a popular item because it is known for being durable, stylish and beautiful. “It has a lovely texture and is flattering on all types of women,” she said.
Hicks also believes the origin of the hair is important. Finding out how hair is obtained by sellers, she said is important. The industry advises that Indian hair should come from a reputable temple hair collector in India and that it come from willing donors. Hicks also noted that suppliers should have some way of guaranteeing the hair you receive has not been processed or chemically treated.
Consider your natural hair texture
Because black women usually have highly textured hair, buying weaves that are bone straight with no amount of curl may look unrealistic. Even chemically relaxed hair has some texture. Hicks recommends that women choose hair that looks as if it could naturally grow from their scalp for the most realistic look.
Some black women don’t want straight hair weaves, they prefer curly or kinky extensions, especially if they are testing a new look with natural hair or they are growing out a relaxer. Try to find a hair weave in a texture that closely matches that of your natural hair. Hicks points out that with proper application, it won’t be noticeable that you are wearing a weave. Your curly roots can easily blend into the weave with no detection.
Human vs. synthetic hair
When shopping for hair weaves, black women have two choice:s human or synthetic hair. Hicks noted that synthetic hair is good for braid extensions, but is not as versatile as human hair for other styles. “Human hair can be curled, permed and colored, while synthetic hair cannot” Hicks explained. “You must decide how you want your weave to look before purchasing it.”
Choosing sewn-in or glued
Sewn-in weaves/extensions are usually better for black hair because the braided styles that women wear under the weave protects natural hair, and they last longer.
On the other hand, glued-in weaves/extensions are intended to be worn for a short period of time, usually no longer than a week. Be mindful that the glue used to attach extensions can damage black hair, especially when being removed. During the removal process you can pull your hair out.
Selecting best hair weave/extensions
When selecting hair extensions, Hicks believes women should consider their budget and lifestyle.
“Hair extensions that are 100 percent human hair, particularly if branded ‘Remy” hair, are preferable to synthetic hair,” said Hicks, who indicated that human hair costs considerably more than synthetic. Purchasing the highest quality hair you can afford will result in hair that looks more realistic. It also will be healthier for the hair and scalp, Hicks said.
Ultimately when selecting weave hair, decide based on the criteria that is most important to you, such as price, available discounts, guarantees, product selection and quality.
