The summer weather may pose a problem for you and your hair. The climate air, which may be dry or humid, may wreak havoc on hair, especially African American hair, by making it frizzy, unmanageable and prone to breakage.  However, employing proper hair care techniques may help you avoid some of those pitfalls.

Proper shampooing helps retain moisture

African American hair is naturally very curly. Because of the texture of tight corkscrew-like curls, it is difficult for natural oils from the scalp to travel down the entire length of the hair shaft. This often results in overly dry hair, which is difficult to manage and is also unhealthy. Dry hair also may become frizzy and unmanageable, and is likely to break from the shaft.

During the warm summer months, consider shampooing your hair no more than once or twice per week. Excessive shampooing strips the hair of its natural oils, causing it to dry out. In addition to limiting the number of times a week you shampoo your hair, use a moisturizing shampoo that will help your hair retain the moisture necessary to keep it looking healthy and shiny.

Routine conditioning prevents frizz and breakage

African American hair requires a lot of conditioning, particularly during the summer. Proper conditioning may help prevent breakage and frizz. A good conditioner coats and protects the hair shaft from humidity.  There is an assortment of conditioners. There are those that contain shea or cocoa butter and may be applied daily. There are leave-in conditioners and regular conditioners that must be rinsed out.  However, before applying, wet your hair slightly so that it is damp. Then apply the conditioner from the roots of your hair to the tips. If your chosen conditioner must be rinsed out, let it set for three to five minutes before washing it out.

In addition to routinely conditioning your hair, consider a monthly hot oil treatment or a deep conditioner. Both treatments, designed to fully immerse your hair in moisture, fight frizz and breakage. During the summer months, these treatments also are essential, if you chemically process your hair with relaxers or dyes.

To maintain the perfect summer hairstyle, remember, the appropriate hair care regimen will keep your hair healthy and shiny.
