Comments ranging from “My tips and toes are happier”, and “Hands down the best” to “Koco rocks” and “Once you go Koco, there is nowhere else to go” are just some of the reasons why Koco Nail Salon and Wax Studio has been named as a finalist for Steve Harvey’s Ford Neighborhood Award.
Harvey, host of “Family Feud” as well as an award-winning radio and televison talk show, makes stars of everyday people through the star studded Ford Neighborhood Awards Show, which will be held in Atlanta. The show is the cornerstone of a three-day weekend filled with activities and entertainment.
Onisha Claire, the owner of Koco Nail Salon and Wax Studio recently held a customer appreciation day at her East Falls salon to thank her customers for catapulting the salon into contention with their votes.
“It’s a great opportunity to receive such a vote of confidence from those you serve,“ said Claire, who hopes the last-minute push will catapult her to number one in the salon category. Last year, she took the number two spot.
Marking the 13th anniversary of this one-of-a-kind show, Harvey and television/radio producer Rushion McDonald created the Hoodie Awards in 2001 to honor urban communities.
The goal was to give star treatment to the “everyday men and women” who uplift their neighborhoods as independent businesses, leaders, educators and churches. There are 12 designated categories including Best High School Coach, Best School Teacher, Best Car Wash/Detail Shop, Best High School, Best Church Choir, Best Soul Food, Best Barber Shop, Best High School, Best Barbeque, Best Beauty Salon, Best Church and Best Community Leader.
The awards program is scheduled for August 6-9, 2015, in Atlanta. Moving the event to Atlanta last year from Las Vegas was designed to enable more of Harvey’s core East coast fan base to attend the event. The expected attendance this year is 150,000. The event has grown, with more venues and more concerts. The three day-expo added a college expo and a Greek step show to draw a younger crowd. This year’s Sunday Choir competition is sponsored by MacDonald’s.
Other popular events will be returning. They include the taping of “Family Feud” live, and “The Steve Harvey Morning Show Live”, which both ensure Harvey is seen and heard by more than 15 million people weekly, and the big awards show at the Phillips Arena. Harvey will host an “Act Like a Success” business seminar based on his bestselling book. There is a Ford VIP After Party following the award show. Additional features of the event are a Table Classic game room and a singing competition to gain entrance to an All White (in dress, that is) Freedom Friday party.
