Philly has a new reality series! And not one of those drama-filled shows with stars who are usually incredibly poor representatives of real life. This African-American, independently produced show is about entrepreneurship, family, and all the other issues that young black business owners face trying to ‘make it in Philly’.

Produced by and starring a majorly African American cast, Makin’ it in Philly is a breath of fresh air for those of us who are tired of watching the foolery of today’s typical show. The stars all have their own respective business ventures, like non-profit organizations, shoe stores, management companies, even an auto body shop. But they all have some stake in lead character Victor Sanders’ newest venture Palmieri Jeans.

“Viewers will get to see all aspects of being a business owner in Philadelphia. The show deals with sexuality, family life, friendship, teamwork, and how to balance it all” says cast member Quiana Montgomery. With a positive storyline and real life examples of African American entrepreneurs its one reality show that Philadelphia, and the entire African American community, should be proud to watch.

Although the show is still taping cast member Nichole Sanders tells us that the show will definitely keep us engaged. “You’ll get to see the hard work, and fun but you also will ge to see the drama and the sad stories too.”

After a few minutes with the cast, I found out that the men… well mainly Victor, brings the comic relief. When I asked him how the cameras have changed his life he joked “Well, I’ve been talking on my cell phone about 13,000 minutes a month now…. I’m about fried!”

But the tight knit cast all have a common goal. They are working towards achieving their dreams, but also working to provide positive examples to their viewers. “I wanted to be able to show the world that you can make it. All my life I had to prove to those that I was going to be successful. When I started the jean line company no one believed in me, but sometimes you have to prove a point and this show is not about me. It’s bigger than me.” Victor said.

On Tuesday Jan. 17th at there will be a premiere party for the show at Mad River in Manayunk. Admission is free and the crew will be taping for an upcoming episode of the Makin’ it in Philly! The show premieres the same night at 8pm on WMCN-TV, and will air every Tuesday. (Click here to find out the channel in your neighborhood.)
