The Brothers Network is producing a multidisciplinary festival inspired by the life of Henry "Box" Brown, an enslaved African who shipped himself to Philadelphia in a wooden box to gain his freedom in 1849. The wooden box will serve as an artistic metaphor to explore the pedagogy of oppression and to examine the notions of liberation through symposia, dialogue and artistic interpretation.
We are honored to be chosen as a winner of a 2012 Knight Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to stage the festival. The grant requires us to raise $25,000 in matching funds. We're on our way to achieving that goal, and you can help us by purchasing your tickets now for our black-tie gala benefit performance of "The Mountaintop."
The Philadelphia Theatre Company, our theater partner for the last five years, has graciously extended to us this opportunity to host this stellar fundraiser at the Suzanne Roberts Theater. In addition to a performance of Katori Hall's gripping new reimagining of Martin Luther King's last night on earth, the event will feature the presentation of TBN's Brother of the Year Award, the polished jazz piano ofV. Shayne Frederick, and global fare provided by 12th Street Catering.
The gala starts at 7 PM on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, 480 South Broad Street (at Lombard) in Philadelphia.
