Solomon Charter School announces September opening
Now accepting applications for grades 6-12, Solomon Charter is a "hybrid" school that will focus on strong academics and the global community
Solomon Charter School, a new Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved public charter school that will offer a blend of classroom and cyber learning experiences, today announced that it is opening this September in Philadelphia and accepting applications for enrollment for students entering grades 6–12. The following academic year (2013-2014) will include K – 12.
Solomon Charter School is located at 1209 Vine Street in Center City. In addition, Solomon Charter School is currently hosting public information sessions at the school each Tuesday and Wednesday evening in July and August from 6:00 –7:00 p.m. and other times by appointment.
Solomon Charter School is one of the first approved American "hybrid" public schools, a model sometimes referred to as "bricks and clicks." Studies have shown that combining the best aspects of traditional classroom learning with online classes produce one of the most effective learning environments.
"The 'bricks' provide face-to-face experience with peers and teachers; the 'clicks' provide opportunities to learn from mentors around the world, friends and educators in many lands and languages, and at a level that is targeted to each student's strengths and needs," said Dr. Saundra Sterling Epstein, Chief Academic Officer. She added that "the 'clicks' allow for individualized learning paces, while holding traditional classroom-based instruction allows us to become a community of diversity."
Solomon Charter School will rest on a firm foundation of strong academics. Students, who will each receive a laptop computer with access to a customized learning management system, will study all core subjects including English, math, science, social studies and reading. In addition, the signature offering of Solomon Charter School's curriculum is immersion in language, culture, history and civilization rooted in the Asian continent.
"Many of the ideas that inspired who we are today as Americans and citizens of the world come from Asia," said Stephen Crane, Founder and Chairman of Solomon Charter School. "We will emphasize the study of language, including analyzing original documents in Mandarin and Hebrew and of foundational linguistic, cultural and historical principles of Asia. This area is increasingly becoming more critically important in our globalized economy, and we will add more Asian languages as the school grows."
Solomon Charter School is a public charter school, a school that students throughout the state can attend without paying tuition. It is open to all grade-eligible Pennsylvania residents.
