It's summertime and a time for sporting sandals, platforms and on occasion, flip flops. To showcase this array of footwear, it also is important to have smooth, great-looking feet. For instance, with that pair of nice sandals add an attractive nail color, and you will enjoy the admiration and compliments from other who will wonder how you do it.
The proper foot care regimen according to Toni Lomax, operator of the Complete Nail Spa at Julius Scissor's, in Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square, will help get your feet looking and feeling summer-ready. " A bit of pampering will help keep your feet extra smooth and moisturized during the summer months, said Lomax
In Lomax's estimation, those in search of a professional, at-home pedicure experience may achieve their goal by following a few simple steps, eight in all.
Step 1: Remove nail polish
The first step is to remove the old polish from your nails. Instead of cotton balls, use lint-free cotton pads. Saturate the cotton pad with polish remover and rub off the old polish. If the color does not come off easily, press the saturated cotton pad on the nail and let it soak in a few seconds. When choosing the perfect polish remover, consider that alcohol- and acetone-free removers are less drying, but don't work as well especially on dark colors.
Step 2: Cut and file nails
Consider using high quality clippers made for clipping toenails. To avoid ingrown nails, cut straight across to just above the skin. Make sure your nail doesn't extend over the top of your toe. To get a soft square shape, file nails in one direction until they are even and slightly rounded at the corners. Basic Emory boards work great, as metal files will rip your nails. Do not clip the sides of your nails; that may cause ingrown toe nails.
Step 3: Soak your feet
Fill a large basin with warm water. Add bath salts, your favorite aromatherapy oil or Epson salt to the water and soak your feet for 10 minutes. The more calloused or cracked your feet, the longer you should soak them.
Step 4: Take care of cuticles
Apply cuticle remover to the base of each nail and rub it in. Leave the cuticle remover on for a minutes and then use an orangewood stick to gently push with a circular motion everywhere skin meets the nail. Be careful to remove skin only on top of the nail; don't touch the toes flesh.
Step 5: Scrub your feet
Apply an exfoliating body or foot scrubs to foot file or a pumice stone to slough away the dead skin on the balls and heals of your feet. You will want to scrub the balls, bottom and sides of your heals and around the toes. Avoid scrubbing too hard; remember some tough skin on our feet is there for protection.
Step 6: Moisturize
Dry your feet thoroughly including between the toes and rub in a thick moisturizer or foot cream. Message the moisturizer into the feet and the calves. You can go all out by rehydrating your cuticles by rubbing in a dab of cuticle oil.
Step 7: Polish toes
Use polish remover to get rid of any excess oils on the nails. Apply a thin base coat of nail polish. Don't paint the cuticle. Wait a minute before adding two coats of your favorite polish, then finish with a thin coat. Clean up any mistakes with an orangewood stick wrapped in cotton or a Q-tip dipped in polish remover. Let nails dry.
Step 8: Finish your pedicure
After you nails have dried, you can sprits your feet with moisturizing oil. This sets your polish and moisturizes your cuticles.
