Sam Lewis, Jr., art collector and entrepreneur, is proud to present the work of Laurie Cooper at Joose Studios, 601 N. 3rd Street, 1st floor, Philadelphia, PA from March 31 – April 7, 2012. This event is the inaugural fundraiser to support the establishment of the Black Women's Political Memorial of Pennsylvania. The opening reception will be held for this exhibit and sale on March 31, 4:00 -8:00 PM. A First Friday reception is scheduled for April 6, 2012 from 5:00- 9:00pm, as well. Lewis sees Women's History Month as the opportune time to honor Black women who devoted their lives to civic endeavors by presenting the art of Laurie Cooper. The artist will be present at both receptions.

Many will be delighted to see these fresh new pastel works by Cooper, and for some, this will serve as an introduction to an artist/illustrator, who has exhibited widely throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Included in the collections of many notable art lovers, her stellar pastels are monumental in presence. She conveys deep emotion through sensitively rendering her subjects that range from mythic figures to portraits of iconic Black athletes and musicians, Trained at the University of Pennsylvania, Cooper reins as a master of the pastel medium.

A consortium of community organizations in the Haddington neighborhood of West Philadelphia has come together to support Sam Lewis's vision for the Political Black Women's Memorial of Pennsylvania to be located at the historical Crystal Bird Fauset House. Crystal Bird Fauset was the first Black woman elected to a state legislature in 1938. This art sale and exhibit will benefit efforts to restore this property and build a landscaped open space to commemorate Black women, who committed their lives to civic work and served in Pennsylvania government.

This is a great opportunity to view and buy original artwork from a renowned fine artist and support a worthy cause that celebrates the lives and contributions of women of African descent to the political history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
