Nearly two years ago, Shari Williams, tired of trying to find a moisturizer to fight her dry skin problems started using her spare time to create organic beauty products. She began mixing oils, pouring concoctions into small bottles and giving them to family and friends to test.
After family and friends raved about the products, a friend suggested that she turn her experimental beauty products into a business, a suggestion that she took and is now ShaShaGlam Beauty and Body Essential Products.
The company, which rests under the umbrella of her firm Shari Williams Enterprises LLC, began with $1,200 in vacation savings.
The Eastern University graduate defines ShaShaGlam as “The Glamazon Home Spa Experience”. “Many women don’t have the time or the resources to spend a day at a spa” explained Williams. “It is my hope they will take the time to minister to themselves and enjoy an affordable home spa experience that leaves them feeling sexy and glamorous.”
That message is implicit in the array of ShaShaGlam’s reasonably-priced products that include lotions, body mist sprays, massage oils, sugar scrubs, whipped body butters, and gourmet soaps.
Williams, the wife of Pennsylvania State Senator Anthony H. Williams and the mother of two daughters, hopes her experience helps other women translates passion into a business. “Time, effort, trials and tribulations, and consistency will reap benefits,” said Williams. In the process of identifying a business opportunity, she advises women to figure out what works, reject what does not, and keep moving toward their goals.
Reflecting on her experience, Williams, who is a 16-year employee of a Pennsylvania state agency, recommends that women business owners spend time considering what is important to them. “You must order your priorities between work, home and other responsibilities and track the hours you spend each week in your business,” said Williams. “If the time is not sufficient, recalculate the time you are spending to ensure long-term results.”
Networking, in Williams’ opinion is a required business activity. “Surround yourself with people you admire and mentors, who believe in you and want you to succeed.” She said. Critical to her success was the ability to define specific goals, with measurable outcomes, and to develop timeline, which she adhered to.
Williams is eager to share advice with her contemporaries and aspiring business owners. “In the end, passion and will power alone won’t cut it.,” offered Williams. “Remember. You need a strategy to succeed.”
