Compassion in three words: 5th graders learn kindness toward animals
A 5th grade class at John Wister Elementary School is sharing what they’ve learned from a humane education program with the help of some PAWS dogs! Claire Tillman, Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia’s Director of Humane Education, developed the program and has visited the classroom with Allison Lamond, PAWS’ Adoption Center manager, and other volunteers monthly since September.
They will continue through the end of the school year.
They have brought their adopted PAWS dogs for hands-on teaching about pit bulls, the need for adoption vs. buying pets, and how to properly approach a dog. They have also taught the students about puppy mills, animal cruelty, and treating animals with care and compassion.
Teacher Lindsay Brown made a video of the students’ assignment: to encapsulate what they learned in three words. Their messages are simple, powerful, and inspirational, and it is clear that this program has made a profound impact. Congratulations to them, and to Lindsay, Claire, Allison, Kim, and Sara for teaching such important lessons!
