The School District of Philadelphia will host an Opening Ceremony for National GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Week on Monday, September 23, 9AM – 1PM, Education Center, Auditorium, 440 N. Broad Street.
GEAR UP is a nationwide, federally funded, grant initiative offered through the U.S. Department of Education that seeks to provide low-income, minority and disadvantaged students with the support and resources they need to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
GEAR UP students are offered access to tutoring, college and career fairs, education and career portfolio development programs, on-campus college visits, PSAT and SAT testing support and more. Parents of GEAR UP students are offered counseling on student attendance and academic progress, college and financial aid advising, and have the opportunity to attend a number of helpful workshops during their student’s high school career.
Currently, eleven District high schools offer GEAR UP programs to more than 5,000 students. Schools with GEAR UP programs include: Fels, Furness, Overbrook, Martin Luther King, Benjamin Franklin, Edison, Frankford, Lincoln, Roxborough, South Philadelphia, and the High School of the Future.
