Israeli and African musicians make Jazz Together opening night of the Israeli Jazzphest, Nov. 10
Grammy nominated clarinetist, Oran Etkin returns to Philadelphia with the mesmerizing Kelenia ensemble at the Clef Club, Nov. 10, Thursday, 8 PM, admission is $15. As its name “Kelenia,” the Bambara word for love between people who are different from each other, Oran brings together musicians from Israel, Mali and America.
Bridging Bamako and Brooklyn, Bass-Clarinet and Balafon, they draw on the ancient influences of their Middle Eastern and African cultures and the urban vibe of the NY modern jazz scene. Kelenia, Oran’s debut recording on Motéma Music, debuted at # 10 on the nationwide radio charts and All Music Guide declared that Oran “sets a new standard for world music in the decade of the 2000’s.
